Abstract
The article discusses how firms can upgrade their work force amid downsizing. Layoffs should be viewed as an opportunity to redesign roles and responsibilities in a way that promotes employee satisfaction. Maintaining training and development programs is essential to supporting employee morale and skill levels during downsizing. Layoffs themselves should be handled in a way that does not diminish a company's reputation either internally or externally. In 2001 Cisco Systems Inc. accomplished this by making generous severance packages and other resources available to dismissed workers.
