Abstract
Search behaviour is a natural and very common response to uncertainty. It is both a method of improving on the information available and of expanding the number of alternatives from which to choose. This survey presents the principal findings of this large research effort. Attention focuses on the individual search behaviour and for the most part the exposition is presented without particular context except where discussion of specific results warrants illustration. To the extent that you do make use of concrete examples these will relate usually to one of the two main areas of application, consumer search and job search. Three important areas which do not concern you directly are the responses of market participants to the search behaviour of others, properties of market or economy-wide equilibrium when search takes place and the econometric issues arising from search behaviour. Author's approach is not historical nor is there space here to go through all the derivations of each model. The approach is to outline the analytical framework of the major models and to simply state the results.
