Abstract
How should US businessmen react to the new social and economic order of political uncertainty, slow growth, costly funds, weakening industrial discipline, and increasing public demands and regulation? The author suggests that, to survive all these challenges, the prudent top manager will need to trim his financial base, gain market share through competitive attrition, maintain tighter control of capital projects, improve employee participation and conditions of work, instigate a regular internal social audit, and educate the public to the legitimacy of enterprise and hard-won profit.
