Abstract
According to estimates, Russia will once again post impressive results in 2003, gross domestic product will grow 5 percent in real terms, and the political and financial situation in the country will remain stable. However, many people have doubts about the quality and sustainability of its economic growth, frequently claiming that Russia's success is due exclusively to high oil prices. Russia's path to prosperity has not yet been definitively determined. Since 1999, the Russian economy has demonstrated very impressive growth, but industrial production has depended more and more on the raw-material and extractive sectors.
