Abstract
The authors reflect on the different criteria used by medical professionals to determine death. Topics covered include the use of cardiorespiratory standard of death from the eighteenth century through the mid-twentieth century, the problems with the definition of death and the establishment of brain death in the late 1950s as a way to stop treatment in someone who is beyond hope. Also noted is a debate on whether the practices of establishing death and organ donation are ethically justifiable.
