Abstract
The article discusses the establishment of the National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) in Washington D.C. The museum was constructed after the passage of the American Indian Act in 1989 and the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act in 1990. NMAI was funded by both the federal government and tribal donors. During its opening on September 21, 2004, it houses over 800,000 objects mostly donated by an oil fortune heir, George Gustav Heye.
