Abstract
The authors respond to criticism of an article they wrote by scholar Michael Gentile on the subject of privatization, unemployment and mortality. The authors attempt to address a criticism concerning the alleged counter-intuitive nature of their central argument concerning the relationship between rapid privatization and short-term adult mortality. The article argues that mass privatization in former Soviet economies was unsuccessful and resulted in increasing unemployment, an increase in the use of alcohol, and stress-related mortality. The authors attempt to address Gentile's criticisms concerning their coding of privatization, particularly in their treatment of Estonia.
