Abstract
CONFLICTS OF INTEREST Dr. Eugene A. Grossi has intellectual property and receives royalties from Medtronic for valve repair devices, and has intellectual property and receives royalties from Edwards Lifesciences. This well-written paper by Hiltner et al. from Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital retrospectively analyzes 9 years' worth of data from the National Inpatient Sample database and updates us with current trends in the use of mechanical aortic valve replacement (mAVR) versus bioprosthetic aortic valve replacement (bAVR) in the modern transcatheter aortic valve replacement era. Patients receiving bAVR were more likely to be white, wealthier, and were more commonly insured by Medicare and less often by Medicaid or private insurance compared to mAVR patients.
