Abstract
The article presents a segment of nineteenth century U.S. history, the construction of the Erie Canal that began in 1817 and was completed in 1825. Politician DeWitt Clinton believed in the project, he promoted it as the link between the Eastern States and the West. The canal resulted in the establishment of inland towns.
