Abstract
This article presents the case of a 58-year-old woman with type 1 diabetes who was admitted to the hospital with a 2-week history of increasing fatigue, word-finding difficulties and right-arm weakness. Tests revealed nothing startling and the symptoms resolved spontaneously within a few hours. This cycle of illness and resolution went on for another five months with no new medical findings. The patient reappeared two months later unable to follow commands. Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain showed restricted diffusion and other brain abnormalities. The patient died three weeks after admission and an autopsy was performed which showed a focal loss of myelin within the white matter of her brain.
