Abstract
It made perfect sense for Rome to endorse Irish influence in parts of the world where the Irish were among the most dominant national groups, had a large (and thus lucrative) laity already in place, and spoke the language fluently. Bishop Fleming in Newfoundland is "socially aggressive" and "noisily Irish" (80). Some eleven years later, and after visiting an impressive 104 archives, Colin Barr returns with I Ireland's Empire: The Roman Catholic Church in the English-Speaking World, 1829-1914 i , a substantial book on the same broad topic: a putative empire of Irish bishops.
