Abstract
An editorial is presented in which the authors discusses the death certificate process as it relates to public health and the opioid epidemic in the U.S. and how lessons may be applied to COVID-19 and other issues. The authors argue in favor of stronger consensus for cause of death (COD) data reporting, improved medical education concerning COD, and updating COD databases.
