Abstract
The article discusses the classification systems used in ophthalmology, specifically in relation to keratoconus. The author distinguishes between grading systems, which describe morphological characteristics of the disease, and staging systems, which classify the disease based on clinical information such as prognosis and treatment recommendations. The author argues that a staging system should be linked to specific treatment recommendations, but this is challenging due to the variety of treatment options available for keratoconus. The author proposes the use of a "performance plot" system to objectively compare the outcomes of different keratoconus treatments. The article is written by Albert Daxer, an ophthalmologist from the Medical University Innsbruck in Austria. [Extracted from the article]
