Abstract
The article presents a case report of a patient in whom a compartment syndrome developed in the upper extremity as the result of prolonged application of considerable negative pressure, a phenomenon that is termed as subatmospheric pressure-induced compartment syndrome. The machine that caused the compartment syndrome in the patient is capable of generating enormous negative pressures. Such machines are commonly used in demolition and industrial cleaning work in which large volumes of heavy material need to be removed. Standard operating procedures to prevent workers from becoming entrapped in similar equipment should include working with a partner and maintaining a minimum distance between the vacuum intake and body parts.
