Abstract
The article discusses a study which tested the hypothesis that diabetes mellitus is an independent risk factor for mortality and that it is a risk factor for cardiac overload and not for acute lung injury. Results show that there is higher 90-day mortality in the diabetes mellitus patients compared to those without the disease. It concluded that diabetes predicts mortality independent of statin therapy but is not associated with acute lung injury in critically ill patients.
