Abstract
Most of the commentators also seemed to agree that both liberals and conservatives are likely tribal and therefore tribally biased at least to some degree, though at least a couple of commentators suggested that conservatives might be more tribal or tribally biased than liberals (e.g., Haas, Quinn (this issue)). But our main argument does not rely on perfect symmetry between liberals and conservatives but rather on the premises that tribalism and ideological epistemology are panhuman tendencies and that both liberals and conservatives (and other ideological groups) likely are tribal and engage in ideological epistemology. Azevedo (this issue) seemed to argue that social science professors aren't actually liberal in practice, but more moderate and status quo orientated, and gave several examples of their non-liberal behavior such as an emphasis on hierarchy and ritual. We do believe, however, that if many conservatives and other unorthodox thinkers are avoiding or withdrawing from social science because of overt hostility or because social science is strongly associated with liberal/progressive values, we should strive to calm the hostility and reduce the connection between science and ideological values.
