Abstract
The author conveys his thoughts on how pediatricians and obstetricians assess the physiological condition of a baby in the first few minutes after birth. The formal assessment is done using the Apgar score at one and five minutes following birth. He is aware as a pediatrician of the unevenness evident in the differences in health and development among children from the first moments of life. He said that children growing up in poverty are at risk for compromised development.
