Abstract
The authors consider diabetes mellitus as a global pandemic with sufferers classified as either having Type 1 diabetes (T1D) or type 2 diabetes (T2D). They state that genomic research has discovered several monogenic causes of diabetes which include maturity onset of diabetes of young (MODY) in which 13 different genes are involved, neonatal diabetes which occurs within 6 months of infancy, and rare syndromic forms of diabetes like the Wolfram syndrome.
