Abstract
An encyclopedia entry for "topiramate" is presented. It refers to a sulfamated monosaccharide that is distinct from other antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) with multiple mechanisms of action. It is approved for adjunctive therapy for partial and generalized seizures in adults and pediatric patients. It is also effective in patients with the Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and infantile spasms. Randomized controlled trials showed efficacy in patients with refractory localization-related epilepsy with and without secondary generalized seizures.
