Abstract
ABSTRACT An internal laser direct structuring (LDS) antenna capable of operating in the 746-787 and 1710-2170 MHz bands, respectively, for band 13 (B13) and bands 4/3/2/1 (B4/B3/B2/B1) long-term evolution (LTE) operation in the smartwatch device is presented. The design comprised a top metal, watch frame, and a bottom LDS frame. The antenna was formed inside the LDS frame with its ground plane encircled by and connected to the metal frame. The multi-band operation was attained by applying one grounding flexible printed circuited board (FPCB) to the metal frame, a matching capacitor, and a tuning portion. The grounding FPCB used as a part of the antenna ground resonance led to successful excitation in the lower band well matched by the matching capacitor. The tuning portion helped the antenna generate wider higher bands to cover B4/B3/B2/B1. The results are described and discussed in the article. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
