Abstract
The article discusses the historical significance of curse tablets. Archaeologists have found more than 1,500 curse tablets belonging to the Greco-Roman world, where robbery victims wrote curses on lead tablets asking a particular god to punish a perpetrator. Archaeological excavations in Roman towns in eastern England have unearthed tablets containing Roman names and indicate that a Roman temple possible stood nearby.
