Abstract
A study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine highlights the elevated risk of fatal drug overdose faced by health care workers in the United States. The study emphasizes the need to identify and intervene on those at highest risk for overdose death. However, the discussion section of the study falls short in addressing the barriers health care workers with opioid use disorder face in accessing evidence-based treatment. The American College of Medical Toxicology has issued a position statement advocating for better access to evidence-based treatment for health care workers with opioid use disorder. The authors hope that the study's findings will shed light on outdated models and concerns that have contributed to high rates of opioid overdose among health professionals.
