Abstract
The Kelvin-Helmholtz system is investigated numerically at the transition between the scrape-off layer and the core of a limiter plasma in a simplified fluid model. The fundamental features of the parallel Kelvin-Helmholtz instability are discussed in a simplified configuration, and a local instability parameter involving the parallel flow and density gradients is exhibited. Results of three-dimensional computations of toroidally symmetric equilibrium solutions of the model are then presented, and the possible destabilization of Kelvin-Helmholtz modes is briefly discussed. It is observed that for the stationary solutions found, the local radial gradients of the density and parallel momentum are such that the instability criterion is not satisfied. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
