Abstract
The article presents a study which examines how the 1978 Jonestown Mass Suicide in Jonestown, Guyana is lined in the literary works of Caribbean writers. Particular focus is given to the analysis of the centripetal and centrifugal concept of Mikhail Bakhtin that dubbed the Jonestown mass death as a carnival. It presents a brief historical overview of the tragedy which highlights Jim Jones and the nature of death. It explores the literary representations of Peoples Temple and Jonestown which suggest the effect of colonialism. It concludes that the carnival concept of Bakhtin might have been caused by the multiple approaches attributed to the event.
