The article presents the author's comments on the analytical and cognitive component of ideology. According to the author, the Marxist conception of ideology is simply theoretically and empirically too narrow, too vague and too little specific, but he have less quarrel talking about the ruling ideas of the ruling class, which is not essentially different from his view of the role of elites in the reproduction of ideology. The author's proposal mainly aims at a general theory of ideology, that is, at an account of the socio-cognitive nature of ideologies, their internal organization, how they related to social practices and discourse, and how they are produced and function in social structure.
