Abstract
The article discusses the allegorization of cultural processes in the works of painters Joseph Wright and John Singleton Copley. Topics discussed include Wright's depiction of industrialist Richard Arkwright and his cotton mills in Cromford, England during the Industrial Revolution, the role of social historians in turning Wright as an artist of the industrial elite, and Copley's portrayal of the escape of merchant Brook Watson from a shark.
