Abstract
Chapter 20 of the book "Clinical Adult Neurology," Third Edition, is presented. The chapter discusses the definition, pathophysiology, classification and types of demyelinating diseases. Common features of demyelinating diseases are inflammation, destruction of central nervous system (CNS) myelin and axonal injury. It explores the symptoms, risk factors, evaluation, prevalence and treatment of acute optic neuritis, acute brainstem syndromes, acute transverse myelitis, acute disseminated encephalomyelitis, neuromyelitis optica and multiple sclerosis.
