The article estimates the true value of a dollar in the New York City economy. Money is eaten up by New York's disproportionately high costs of housing and elevated prices for basic goods and services. Expenses in New York are compared with similar services in Minneapolis and found to be higher. The article cannot measure the social and cultural advantages in New York, but suggests that they are worth the cost of living in the city.
