Student interest in geriatric medicine: comparing beginning medical, nursing and pharmacy students.

Abstract
The aging of the population has increased concern about how to motivate health profession students to choose careers in geriatric medicine. A cross-sectional survey of first-year medical (n = 83), nursing (n = 131) and pharmacy students (n = 127) was used to explore variation in students' interest in working in the field of geriatrics. One-third of all the students said they were at least somewhat interested in the field, with pharmacy students having the most interest. Significant determinants of student interest in geriatric medicine included having a previous course in aging, student age, and interest in making home visits. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
