Abstract
The authors comment on the article "Extending Research Protections to Tribal Communities," published within the issue, which examined whether it is appropriate to extend the Belmont Report's ethical principles beyond the individual research subject to include tribal communities. Topics include the importance of tribal sovereignty in developing research protocols and guidelines, the political right to self-determination and why the principle of solidarity should be added to research protections.
