Abstract
Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) is a condition of the venous system of the lower limbs with presentations ranging from unsightly varicose veins to venous ulceration. Traditionally sufferers of CVI with venous hypertension from superficial venous incompetence were treated surgically or managed conservatively with compression therapy. In recent times venous ablation techniques have developed, offering less invasive, safe, effective alternatives to surgery with comparable recurrence rates. Techniques conducted under local anaesthetic and ultrasound guidance include thermal, chemical and mechano-chemical ablation. One of the greatest benefits to come from the developments of endovenous ablation is the potential to treat previously untreatable superficial incompetence in the elderly population, those at greatest risk of venous ulceration.
