Abstract
BACKGROUND Among the gynecologic malignancies, the endometrial carcinoma (EC) is the third most common and has the greatest prevalence in women of age 55-65 years. Usually the majority of these group-age women are diagnosed with EC first stage. MATERIALS AND METHODS Medical records are taken from the Department of Obstetrics Gynecology of the Hietzing Hospital, in Vienna, Austria, and it is also a review of the literature regarding the early EC and its surgical treatment. Literature search was carried out in PubMed. The study design was case report. The aim of this study was to describe a case of early stage EC that underwent total laparoscopic hysterectomy with bilateral salpingooophorectomy. This paper will discuss also the advantages of the laparoscopic hysterectomy over the traditional surgical interventions for treatment of early stages EC. RESULTS In our case the 45-year-old patient was asymptomatical until the moment that she had irregular vaginal bleeding and the result was negative for tumor makers, an ultrasonographic examination resulted with a linear endometrial thickness of 8 mm, but histopathologic examination of the material taken from endometrial curettage resulted in endometrial adenocarcinoma. Total laparoscopic hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy was carried out. CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS Treatment of early stages EC through laparoscopic surgery was considered as a method that has more advantages compared to the open laparotomy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
