Abstract
The article discusses the study which focused on the reconstitution of vesicular glutamate transporter and its dependence on membrane potential, potential of hydrogen (pH) gradient and chloride concentrations. It revealed that major vesicular transporter for glutamate (VGLUT1) has an intrinsic ability to transport chloride. The study also showed that the chloride conductance is important for the loading of vesicles with glutamate by allowing VGLUT1 to act as a glutamate exchanger.
