Abstract
This article discusses the incidence of seizures following proton beam therapy (PBT) for the treatment of meningiomas. The authors report two cases of new or worsening seizures following PBT and conducted a systematic review of the literature to determine the overall occurrence of this adverse event. The review included 16 studies, which consisted of case reports, case series, and retrospective cohort studies, and identified a total of 707 patients. Among these patients, 5 (0.7%) developed new or worsening seizures. The authors conclude that while seizures are a rare adverse event following PBT, anti-seizure medication should be considered, particularly for middle fossa meningiomas where the temporal lobes may be more susceptible to radiation.
