Abstract
We report here the process of oxidation and its role in the synthesis of Ti2AlC in various conditions of the synthesis process. The initial reactants were either mixed in a mortar-pestle or mechanically milled, kept as a powder or isostatically pressed into pellets, sintered at 1000-1100°C either in ambient condition or in argon atmosphere or with vacuum held fixed or with dynamic vacuum or sealed under vacuum in a quartz glass tube. It was observed that the sintered products were TiO2 and Al2O3 only in all the cases except for the milled, pelletized and sintered in dynamic vacuum and in quartz tube-vacuum sealed cases. In the case of the samples annealed under static vacuum conditions, in powder form (for both milled and hand-mixed samples) showed small traces of nitride formation. Sintering under dynamic vacuum and in sealed quartz tube modifies the pressure of oxygen around the sample such that the matrix of Al2O3 creates a protective cocoon around the intermediary phases of Ti-Al-C, preventing their further oxidation and thereby leading to the formation of Ti2AlC.
