Abstract
Maize in the Philippines has been evolving through natural and human-directed selection for more than 500 years. Forty-eight initially collected Philippine traditional maize varieties or populations were characterized with emphasis on tolerance and/or resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses. The varieties exhibited high variability for 9 qualitative and 15 quantitative traits. Several varieties showed outstanding performance in terms of downy mildew resistance, potential corn borer resistance, lysine content and earliness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
