Abstract
The article discusses complex environmental systems and the necessity of fostering research that improves humans' ability to live sustainably on Earth and strengthens our understanding of the links between human behavior and natural processes. Topics include the most pressing environmental issues facing humans and what must be done to ensure progress toward understanding the feasible options for sustainability, such as making environmental issues the top governmental priority, an increased global perspective regarding socioeconomic systems, and the ability of institutions and governments to keep pace with the rate and extent of environmental change. Also are the opportunities for sustainability through environmental research and education.
