Abstract
The article presents a study on the characteristics and outcomes of a series of critically ill obstetric patients admitted to the Medical-surgical Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in a university-affiliated hospital in the U.S. between January 1, 1998 and September 30, 2005. Results suggest that increasing prenatal care must be considered, since maternal mortality remains due to frequent Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS), organ failures, and shock.
