Abstract
The article presents a study that evaluates the capability of liver stiffness (LS) to predict esophageal varices that leads to the need for preventive therapy particularly in patients coinfected with HIV or hepatitis C virus (HCV). The study is undertaken in HIV/HCV-coinfected patients exhibiting liver cirrhosis who underwent upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. The study reveals that LS is associated with portal pressure in HCV monoinfected patients and can predict esophageal varices.
