Abstract
The article examines whether the hypercapnia test response can be used as a weaning outcome predictor in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) intubated patients. The modified method of re-inhalation of expired air is the basis of the hypercapnia test. A more blunted response to the hypercapnia test was seen in COPD patients who failed weaning. The combined hypercapnic respiratory drive and hypercapnic ventilatory response values should be below the threshold values to be useful in predicting weaning failure.
