Abstract
Thermal cycling qualification and verification (TCQV) of fiber optic cables (FOC) for the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) flight project has been performed to enhance the mission assurance. The qualification of FOCs has been carried out to meet MSL project requirements. The FOCs were of significant interest in this study in that they survived three times (33) the total number of expected thermal diurnal cycles resulting from all environmental and operation exposures occurring over the life of the flight hardware including all relevant ground operations and mission phases. Qualification was performed by subjecting FOC hardware to extreme temperature environments and assessing any structural failures or degradation in optical transmission due to overstress or thermal cycle fatigue. We are reporting the qualification results of FOCs for MSL project in this letter. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
