Abstract
The article discusses sequentially implanted bilateral cochlear implant cases, selected as part of a multi-centric study conducted by Cochlear UK in Great Britain. The insertion depth difference is correlated with the relative pitch offset at the base of the electrode arrays. Symmetrical insertions produce a more usual pattern of hilateral speech results in noise than asymmetrical insertions at the 9-month stage. An asymmetrical insertion can produce greater patient dissatisfaction with their second device than symmetrical insertions. However, an asymmetrical insertion can still produce some binaural advantage.
