Abstract
The article presents tips on how to address four distressing signs and symptoms many patients with terminal illnesses experience in the intensive care unit (ICU). Providing palliative care can be challenging in a busy ICU geared toward the care of acutely ill patients. One must be prepared to relieve or manage common end-of-life signs and symptoms, including escalating or unrelenting pain, terminal delirium, dyspnea, and terminal secretions, besides offering emotional support to the patient and family.
