Abstract
The article reports on the move by newly appointed Portland, Oregon district attorney (DA) Mike Schmidt to order the release of more than 300 protesters as of August 2020 despite the opposition by Portland police and Multnomah County sheriff. Also cited are Schmidt's promise to lower penalties for low-level nonviolent crimes like trespassing, and a brief profile of Schmidt including his teaching stint at a public high school in New Orleans, Louisiana.
