Abstract
A cumulant-based approach for the estimation of eigenfrequencies and damping coefficients of a vibrating system excited by a random force is presented. Cumulants of sensors output of the system are used with a state-space representation to provide a method for modal parameter estimation. This method uses properties of a shifted Hankel matrix formed with cumulants to estimate the transition matrix of the state-space model. The transition matrix is related to modal parameters. A simulation example is included to demonstrate the effectiveness of the use of cumulants when the signals are corrupted by a Gaussian noise. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
