Abstract
In this study, we first inferred the genetic variability of twoBagarius bagariuspopulations collected from Ganges and Brahmaputra rivers of India using two mtDNA markers. Sequence analysis ofCOIgene did not show significant differences between two populations whereas cytochromebgene showed significant differences between two populations. Followed by, genetic relationship ofB. bagariusandB. yarrielliwas analyzed usingCOIand cytochromebgene and the results showed a higher level genetic variation between two species. The present study provides support for the suitability ofCOIand cytochromebgenes for the identification ofB. bagariusandB. yarrielli. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
