Abstract
The article discusses a case-control study on mortality among children with complicated severe malnutrition (CSM) in Kenya and Malawi. Death among children is characterized by microbial metabolites, increased energetic substrates, inflammatory markers and acute phase proteins. It reveals that systemic inflammation and bioenergetic deficits are the biological processes to help them survive.
