Abstract
The patient first noticed the tremor after she recovered from cerebral toxoplasmosis encephalitis in 1997. The incidence of parkinsonism in HIV patients was previously estimated to be approximately 5%.[1] Several mechanisms were proposed, including HIV-induced basal ganglia neuroinflammation, HIV-associated dementia, or basal ganglia lesions caused by an underlying opportunistic infection. A 64-year-old woman with known HIV infection and a history of cerebral toxoplasmosis was referred to our Movement Disorders clinic for evaluation of progressive bilateral hand tremor.
