Abstract
The article focuses on National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) generation of Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) sea surface temperature (SST) products. It presents the development of GOES, from the efforts of the National Environment Satellite, Data, and Information Service (NESDIS) and University of Wisconsin to produce operational SSTs and develop SST retrieval algorithms, to the NOAA's expanding coverage in the generation of geostationary SST products. It presents several operational GOES SST algorithms including the initial operational algorithm and radiative transfer model-based algorithms. It also discusses the processes in SST retrieval and where SST products can be applied such as studying diurnal cycle and phases of mesoscale features.
