Abstract
The article presents a cohort study on the causes of deaths among HIV-positive individuals in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil during the widespread use of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). The study has analyzed in two-year period the death rates of HIV-positive persons in the city from 1997-2006 using Poisson models and survival models. Results show that 226 of 1,538 eligible patients had died during the period of study, which represented to a mortality rate of 3.2 per 100 person-years.
